Who I am
Vine & Chalk (vineandchalk.co.uk) is run by me, Radu Vasile, as an individual. I decide how your personal data is used, so I am the data controller under UK data protection law. You can contact me at radu@vineandchalk.co.uk.
What I collect, why, and for how long
Contact form
If you use the contact form, I collect your name, email address, subject and message. I use them to reply to you. My lawful basis is legitimate interests: I have a genuine interest in answering people who write to me.
The form sends your message to my email inbox. I keep it for 12 months after our last message, then delete it. You do not have to use the form. Without a name and email address I cannot reply.
Comments
If you leave a comment on an article, I collect the name, email address and comment text you enter, and any website address you add. WordPress also records your IP address and your browser’s user agent string, which helps me spot spam. Your name and comment are published once I approve them, so anyone can read them. Your email address is not shown. I use it only to contact you about your comment.
The comment form has an optional box to save your name, email address and website in cookies on your device, so you do not have to type them again. These cookies last for one year.
My lawful basis is legitimate interests: I want to run a discussion on my articles and keep spam out. Comments are stored on this site, which Krystal Hosting Ltd hosts. I keep a comment for as long as its article stays on the site, unless you ask me to delete it sooner. Email me to ask. A deleted comment can remain in Krystal’s backups for up to 31 days.
Cookie choices
The cookie banner stores your choice in a cookie called cookieadmin_consent on your device for 180 days (six months), so the site remembers it. After that, the banner asks again. My lawful basis is legitimate interests: the site needs to remember your choice.
Analytics
If you accept analytics cookies, I use Google Analytics 4 through Google’s Site Kit plugin. It records which pages are visited, your device and browser type, and your approximate location. My lawful basis is your consent. You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer. Google Analytics keeps this data for 2 months.
Hosting, email and backups
Krystal Hosting Ltd hosts this site and my email. Its servers keep logs that record your IP address, the pages requested and the time. My lawful basis is legitimate interests: keeping the site working and secure. Krystal also keeps daily backups for up to 31 days, so a message you sent can remain in a backup for that long.
Who receives your data
Krystal Hosting Ltd (hosting and email) and Google (analytics, only with your consent). I do not sell your data.
Transfers outside the UK
Google may process data outside the UK, including in the United States. Google says it relies on the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and on standard contractual clauses. See policies.google.com/privacy/frameworks.
Krystal Hosting Ltd hosts the site and my email. Its privacy policy says it may hold data at its suppliers’ data centres, some of which are outside the UK. See krystal.io/legal/privacy-policy.
Your rights
You can ask me for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict how I use it, or to move it to another provider. If I rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Email me and I will reply within one month.
You can object
You have the right to object to my use of your data where I rely on legitimate interests. Email me and I will stop unless I can show a compelling reason.
Complaints
You can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. I would appreciate the chance to resolve it with you first.
Automated decisions
I do not make decisions about you using automated means.
Changes
I will update this policy before I start a newsletter, online events or a shop.
